Holiday Pad

An outdated apartment receives a new lease on life. A previously enclosed kitchen now opens up into the living space, defined by and refined with perimeter bulkheads, a feature colour wall and a custom made display unit behind the sofa. Neutral earthy tones with hints of blue ( the ocean ) and gold ( the sun ) sets the tone in this space. Relaxed, understated yet stylish. The theme continues into both the guest bedroom, main bedroom and bathrooms with louvred shutters as window treatment, manipulating and filtering light.

Bombay Bicycle Club BBC

The Bombay Bicycle Club (BBC)

Welcome to The new and improved Bombay Bicycle Club (BBC). This famous landmark on one of Cape Town’s busiest intersections just got a new lease on life. Known for being a bit wacky and ‘over the top’ venue the new interior is in keeping with this design approach, inspired by chaotic, colourful Bombay and bicycles in general. All shapes and sizes. It pays homage to owning a bicycle, riding one and aspiring to own one. The spaces celebrate happiness, humor and finding one’s balance in life and society. Non trendy paint colours and a busy mix of fabrics deliberately clash but in a fun and quirky way. If you wish to join the club, you are invited, basically.

Rosebank Renovation Onnah Design

Rosebank Renovation

Here is lovely renovation story, completed in the heart of Rosebank, Cape Town, South Africa. In direct response to the new normal: working from home and spending more quality time at home, both indoors and outdoors. An underutilized formal living space was converted into a functional WFH space neatly, sensitively separated from a dining space via a “colonial” type room divider. Two tall Oak cabinets framing a cottage pain window, provide impressive storage and display space in the office space. The room terminates in a stunning feature wallpaper with a tinted mirror in the hallway bouncing off light beautifully. An outdoor pool patio and a courtyard braai area also received a new lease on life with sensible seating with an improved flow between interior and exterior spaces. Lastly, both the guest and main bedroom were updated in a contemporary yet classic style, a perfect fusion of the clients personal style and taste.

Beach Villa

Living on the beach, literally ! A large family home in the Strand received a welcome makeover late last year. Allfence was the dream team that made it all happen and with contributors such as Renovation zone responsible for the beautiful joinery and Cara Saven Wall Design for stunning wallpaper, the vision for the property ‘s new identity became an easy reality. Once again, a huge thank you to my clients for their faith, trust and patience during what was a rather fast paced project! And Muchas gracias to Karl Rogers Photography for capturing the essence of this beach inspired, now Villa! 🏖️🍸📸

Lock up and go

So happy to share this story of a successful apartment renovation with you all. The project was supposed to start March 2020. No need to remind you that that is when Covid hit our shores, so we were forced to wait until Lockdown level 3 before we could start. The German clients, by then, returned home, so the entire project proceeded with them being in Europe and us communicating only via e mail and whatsapp. They returned to SA around August 2020 and have not left since, too happy with their new apartment 🙂 They made me a beautiful album with before, during and after photos of the project, as thank you. But it is I who am so grateful to Petra and Till, for appointing ONNAH DESIGN and investing so much faith and trust in me to see this through. Herewith the story in pictures. Thank you to my A team who made it happen and to Mathew Van Niekerk for the beautiful photos!

Silverhurst Estate Onnah Design Interior

Silverhurst Estate

The brief: we need everything. I was presented with an empty house to fill, with only curtains in place. Every room in this large 6 bed family home was fitted out with new furnishings, fixtures and art. The classic contemporary look fits in perfectly with the client’s laid back style, stylish, sophisticated, but always relaxed.

Rondebosch Residential Refurbishment

Rondebosch Residential Refurbishment

A brave young couple took on the task of remodelling their property in Rondebosch. They approached me two years ago, allowing enough time for council approval and all design work and budgets to be in place by the time construction started in February 2019. I was appointed as architect and interior designer and am extremely grateful to have been a part of this transformation. Things were turned on its head by relocating the front door and kitchen, allowing more space inside for the lounge and dining functions. A negative space in backyard made space for a sexy new indoor braai/ pool pavilion, a second heart to the home, other than the new kitchen with extra long prep island. A lovely spacious family home filled with plenty light and many eye catching features through out.

Keurboom Street, Milnerton

Previously featured, a 1960’s house in Milnerton, Cape Town, renovated earlier this year in 2019, was recently furnished in full. Photographs courtesy: @Mathew Van Niekerk. A property that was in desperate need of some TLC, is now beaming with new life, warmth and positive energy. A true gem ready for occupation 🙂 This family home is all about relaxed open plan living with all rooms feeding off the main living space. The dining room flows effortlessly to a large welcoming patio surrounded by a beautiful garden with a stunning view of Table Mountain. Decor items enhance furniture choices and layout and introduce colour and texture resulting in a warm, aesthetically pleasing interior.

Dear Hanno,

I am the nephew of the previous owners of 16 Keurboom Street, Milnerton.  I was forwarded the link to the Visi article which showcased your incredible work on the house.  I felt I had to write to you to say how impressed I was.

I gradually saw the house dilapidate from my childhood (early 1970s).  I am amazed that you saw anything to redeem in the house!  I believed when my aunt and uncle left that the house would have to be demolished.

Congratulations on an excellent piece of work.

Best wishes David

cafe manhattan onnah design-min

Café Manhattan

This eatery and bar in the heart of De Waterkant, Cape Town, received a much needed facelift. Known as one of Cape Town’s oldest gay institutions, the new interior celebrates the colourful lives of the LGBT Community worldwide. Inspired by sexy Texas, bold Mexico and off course, wild Africa. The spaces are now lighter, brighter and so much more fun. It oozes a welcoming warmth and a special positive energy.
